Abstract:
This chapter conducts an assessment of the current compressed natural gas (CNG) transportation infrastructure in Texas, and the consequences of establishing a large-scale sustainable transportation infrastructure in the future. The purpose of this assessment is to increase the demand for the consumption of CNG as a primary transportation fuel, on behalf of the public and private sector, by establishing transportation infrastructure in Texas underpinned by the partnership between Universities and public transportation with subsidies from the government. Our current petroleum based infrastructure is harmful to the environment, is a threat to national security, and does not provide economic stability. This chapter analyzes the necessary components that must be considered when determining the legitimacy of CNG as a long-term sustainable transportation fuel with an adequate infrastructure. This assessment can be applied not only in Texas, but other states and countries as well. It can also be used to inform those who are responsible for the management of Texas commodities, roadways and associated facilities, and air quality.
