On April 11,2015 our team visited the Freedom CNG Station at the Houston Distribution Center Center. Mr. John Athon of Freedom CNG walked s through the process of compressing natural gas and how the station works to fill the fuel tanks of all types of vehicles from passenger cars all the way to over-the-road semi trucks. When we asked about safety, Mr. Athon explained to us that CNG is a very safe fuel. He said that because CNG is a gas, it is lighter than air and so in the event of a leak would not pool on the ground, potentially contaminating the soil or water. Instead, a leak would rapidly dissipate in the air. Additionally, he told us that CNG’s ignition point is much higher than that of gasoline or diesel and so the risk of a tank catching on fire is lessened.
“Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a clean, affordable fuel that has been used in vehicles for decades. With its popularity surging among fleet owners and consumers, more people want to know about the safety aspects of CNG. In this video Stephe Yborra from NGV America navigates through the safety and realities of driving a natural gas vehicle.”
