From the EIA graphic we see R&D natural gas development for both CNG and LNG has met the challenges of creating natural gas vehicles that perform nearly as well as their gas and diesel counterparts. Their range is slightly below “regular” vehicles and more fueling locations are available every day.
The problem is further improvements to the network of pipelines carrying the gas from point of production to market must be made in order to facilitate the demand for natural gas vehicles. President Obama announced on 4-21-2015 that $3.5 billion is needed to replace aging pipelines and build new infrastructure.
According to a report from the U.S. Department of Energy titled “Costs Associated with Compressed Natural Gas Fueling Infrastructure,” the cost of filling stations ranges from $5,500 for a home pump to $1.8 million for a large retail operation. Our group visited the Freedom CNG station and learned representative John Athon that the current cost for construction of facility that size in Houston, TX is greater than $3 million.
