Enough Natural Gas to Last 100 Years?
In 2012 the U.S. Energy Information Administration estimated that at the current rate of consumption the United States had about a supply of natural gas to last 87 years. In his 2012 State of the Union Address, President Obama said the supply could last 100 years. The Potential Gas Committee, based at the Colorado School of Mines, issues annual reports on the nation’s proven gas reserves, stated in their 2015 report that ,” new and advanced exploration, well drilling, completion and stimulation technologies are allowing us increasingly better delineation of and access to domestic gas resources – especially ‘unconventional’ gas,” The continued development of US shale gas is fueling this rise in natural gas resources, particularly from the Appalachian and Texas Gulf Coast shales.
